RESULTS OF TREATING PITUITARY TUMOR BY GAMMA KNIFE AT HUE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
For 30 months, from Septembet 2006 to July 2009, the Gamma Knife was used at Hue University Hospital to treat 40 patients of pituitary tumors, 45% of whom were male and 55% female. Sixteen of these patients were recurrent or residual patients who were operated more than once.

The mean age was 41,3 years, with the youngest being 20 years old and the oldest 70. Their common symptoms were, decrease visual acuiry and or visual field defects and endocrine disorders with 82,5% of tumors of under 30mm and 17,5% over 40mm. The mean peripheral dose (isodoseline 50%) was 15,5Gy and maxdose was 31,3Gy. 47,5% of tumors are function adenoma and 52,5 of tumors are non function adenoma. The classification by Hardy and Wilson: Grade III: 42,5%, Grade II 30%, Grade I 15%, Grade IV 12,5%, Grade V 0%.
All of the patients treated did not show any perioperative complications. Most of them were able to return home within one or three days after treatment.
After 30 months of our operation with the Gamma Knife, all of our patients have been reexamined after post operation, 23,1%% of the patients have improved  their visual acuity and visual field. There were loss of libido, amenorrhea and galactorrhea have improved after gamma knife. MRI for post-operation control and results show that 44% patients have their tumors decrease in size, 52% patients have their tumors remain the same in size and 4% patients have their tumors increase in size. No death or serious complications are reported to be caused by Gamma Knife treatment at Hue University Hospital.
